Facts: The emperors of ancient China had a preference for flat-faced toy dogs—the Pekingese, Shih Tzu, and Pug were all developed as refined pets of the emperor. Loving / Charming / Mischievous

Facts: Bred for hunting hare (the breed name is based on the word “hare”) and that the first packs appeared in England sometime in the 1200s. Outgoing/Friendly/people-oriented.

Facts: Friendly/curious/spunky. Dachsund means “badger dog,” in German. Was developed to enthusiastically dig his way into a badger den and dispatch its occupant. The Dachshund’s long, low body was custom-made for this dirty subterranean work.
French Bulldog

Facts: Friendly/bright/amusing.The Boston Terrier has been the official mascot of Boston University for nearly 100 years. Judge, from then on known in breed histories as “Hooper’s Judge,” became the patriarch of the Boston Terrier breed and the common ancestor of almost all true Bostons.

Facts: Calm/Corageous/Friendly. The Bulldog is the national symbol of England. Historical evidence suggests that Bulldogs were created in 13th-century England, during the reign of King John, for the “sport” of bullbaiting, in which a staked bull fought a pack of dogs while spectators bet on the outcome.

Facts: Alert/Lively/Inquisitive. Russells were bred to be swift enough to run with the hounds and tough but compact enough to go to ground and bolt prey.

Facts: Even-Tempered/Hardworking/Loyal. British pointing dogs hunted hares in tandem with coursing hounds. The Pointer would find and indicate prey, and the hounds gave chase.
Labrador Retriever

Facts: Friendly/Outgoing/Active. Traditional waterdog of Newfoundland, long employed as a duck retriever and fisherman’s mate. The Lab’s thick, tapering tail—an “otter tail,” — serves as a powerful rudder, as the dog swims and aids the dog in turning.
American FoxHound

Facts: Easy going/ Sweet tempered/ Independent. Today, the American Foxhound is the state dog of Virginia. Used to hunt foxes, owned by George and Martha Washington.

Facts: Buttercup. Patient/ Low-key/ Charming. Originally bred in France and Belgium. Believed to be bred by friars who wanted to create a low-built scenting hound that could plod over rough terrain while followed on foot by a human hunting partner tracking rabbit and deer.

Facts: Beethoven. Courageous/ Good natured/ dignified.The Mastiff as we know it came into focus in medieval England, used as big-game hunters, nighttime guardians of estates, and war dogs.
Neapolitan Mastiff

Facts: Fang from HP. The breed might go back as far as 700 BC, with artifacts from several ancient civilizations depicting Mastino-like canines. In the Roman Empire, they found employment as war dogs, gladiators, and guardians whose bestial looks and huge frame were calculated to throw the fear of Jove into their adversaries.
Doberman Pinscher

Facts: Alert/Fearless and Loyal. The “Tax Collector’s Dog” quickly gained an international reputation as a working dog supreme. Dobermans have excelled at police and military K-9 duty, as therapy dogs and service dogs for the disabled, as search-and-rescuers, and in competitive dog sports.
Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Facts: Smart/ Alert/ Affectionate. The world’s most famous Pembroke fan is Elizabeth II. The queen got her first Pembroke, Dookie, in 1933 and has not been without one or more since. Can be distinguished from the Cardigan by their pointed erect ears.
Cardigan Welsh Corgi

Facts: Loyal/ Affectionate/ Smart. Cardigans are built low to the ground to best nip at the heels of cattle and avoid being kicked. The adaptable Cardigan did double duty on long cattle drives, moving the herd by day and serving as a flock guardian at night. Can be distinguished from the Pembroke by their rounded ears.
Beagle

Facts: Merry/ Friendly/ Curious. The phrase “foot hound” is vital to understanding the Beagle’s broad appeal for hunters in England, the Continent, and North America. Unlike larger pack hunters like foxhounds or Harriers, the Beagle could be hunted on foot—no horse was necessary.
Black and Tan Coonhound

Facts: Easy going/ Bright/ Brave. Bred for early settlers to hunt raccoons for meat and pelt. These hounds trail raccoon scent through moonlit woods and swamps until they “tree” their quarry, bawling along the way in a clear, musical voice to mark their location to rifle-toting hunters.
