Facts: Named for where is was bred… Anatolia, or Asia Minor, is the peninsula that constitutes the Asian portion of Turkey. American ranchers began importing Anatolians in the postwar 1950s. Lieutenant Robert Ballard (U.S. Navy) acquired a pair of Anatolians while stationed in Turkey.

Black Russian Terrier

Facts: Black ONLY. Bred to work with the Russian Army to guard and protect their borders. Its estimated that 17 breeds make up their genetics. Added to the AKC Stud Book in 2004.

German Pinscher

Facts: German Pinscher is among Germany’s oldest breeds and the prototype of other pinscher breeds. “ ‘pinscher’ appears to be a Germanic form of the French word ‘pincer,’ meaning to seize or to nip.” German Pinschers originally earned a living: rat killing.

Giant Schnauzer

Facts: Salt/pepper or Black ONLY. Giant Schnauzer developed in the Bavarian Alps in the mid-1800s- bred up from the Standard Schnauzer, used to drive cattle. After railroads rendered cattle drives obsolete, Giants found work as European police and military K-9s.

Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

Facts: Swissies descend from war dogs brought over the Alps by Julius Caesar’s legions. Worked as all around farm dogs. The Greater Swiss is closely related to the Bernese Mountain Dog and is a component breed of the Saint Bernard and Rottweiler.

Belgian Sheepdog

Facts: All black. During the 20th Century- Paris and New York used Belgian Sheepdogs as police dogs in this era. Customs agent employed them on border patrols, rooting out smugglers. The Belgian Sheepdog Club of America was formed in 1949.

Belgian Tervuren

Facts: Known in their homeland as the Chien de Berger Belge, the breed’s English name derives from the village of Tervuren, the home of master breeder M.F. Corbeel. Today’s Tervs are employed as military and police K-9s, search-and-rescue workers, service dogs for the disabled, actors (in the movie “The Company of Wolves,” the wolves are played by Tervs), and champions at dog shows, on agility courses, and in obedience and herding trials.

Polish Lowland Sheepdog

Facts: PON is the acronym for the Polish breed name, Polski Owczarek Nizinny. Believed that PONs are the result of breeding Hunnic dogs with native stock in the region now known as Poland. PONs were bred to be levelheaded flock dogs by day and fearless guard dogs by night. In the 1500s, traders brought PONs to Scotland, where it’s thought they became a piece of the genetic puzzle that formed the Bearded Collie.
