Breeding OC3 Flashcards
What is a Primary Uterine Inertia?
Uterus is not moving or contracting. Can be due to small litter with inadequate hormones so birthing isn’t stimulated.
Or the litter is large and the uterus is so overstretched that muscles can’t respond to the hormones to contract
What is a Secondary Uterine Inertia?
The uterus WAS contracting but stopped, could be due to exhaustion.
What is the normal birthing position of pups?
‘Diving’ position, the nose and legs coming together and forward
What is the abnormal birthing position of pups?
Rump first, legs tucked up under stomach
Give three clinical signs of Eclampsia (Ca Deficiency)
- Agitation/nervousness
- Muscle tremors
- Seizures
Give two clinical signs of Metritis (inflammation of uterine lining)
- Vaginal discharge
- Malaise
Give two clinical signs of Mastitis (mammary)
- Yellow/pink milk
- Inflamed mammary glands
What is Agalactia (milk)?
Lack of milk production, due to exhaustion/poor nutrition
May respond to oxytocin!
What is Fading Puppy Syndrome (thrives then dies)?
Puppy appears to be healthy but fails to thrive and dies within 14 days.
Signs include isolation, less active, suckle enthusiastically and then suddenly stops, crying, hyper-extension of legs/spasms
Describe what an Umbilical Hernia is
Pad of fat protrudes umbilical ring which isn’t closed. May need surgery to fix.
What is Puppy Head Gland Disease?
- Inherited condition, mother shouldn’t be bred from again!
- This is a staphylococcal infection.
- Clinical signs are a few spots appear on the head which swell then an abscess develops. Young may be permanently disfigured.
Explain the term Excessive Haemorrhage and the reasons why this may occur during or after giving birth.
- Due to placenta not detaching after birth/pieces being left behind
- Too much bleeding during or after the birth.
May be due to uterine or vaginal rupture or tearing, rupture of a blood vessel or a clotting defect in the dam.
Describe how you would prevent Excessive Bleeding from the umbilical cord?
- Tie the cord with thread, or clamp it with a pair of clean forceps.
- Could also clamp the end of the cord with fingers!
