Breathing System Flashcards
How do gases move?
Diffusion
5 stages of how oxygen and carbon dioxide is exchanged in our lungs…
Trachea (wind pipe) - bronchi - bronchus - bronchioles - alveoli where gases are exchanged
What is diffusion?
Gas moving from a high concentration to a low concentration.
Thorax is what part of our body?
Top.
Where are our lungs? 3 points.
In the thorax, separated by the diaphragm protected by our rib cage.
Breathing out is when… (3)
Our thorax relaxes causing the pressure inside our lungs to increase as the volume/amount of space in our lungs decrease pushing CO2 out.
Breathing in is when…
Our thorax contracts causing volume/space inside our lungs to inside increase causing a pressure decrease allowing air in.
What do artificial ventilators do?
Help’s people under anaesthetic or people who have lung problems/disease breath.
How does the ‘iron lung’ work? (6)
When patient is placed into a chamber and covered head downwards. This allows air to be pumped in, increases the pressure and causing the lungs to relax, fall in and breath out and then pressure decrease where the air is removed allowing the patient to breath in.
Pro of the iron lung?
Allows people to breath/stay alive.
Negative toward iron lung? (3)
Not very portable, needed 24/7, can affect the patients lower body’s blood flow.
