Blood Vessels Flashcards
What do arteries do?
Takes blood to the heart.
What are the 3 types of blood vessels?
Arteries, Veins and Capillaries.
What are the properties of arteries?
Elastic fibres, to allow expanding due to the high blood pressure it carries.
Large lumen and strong walls
Where do the veins carry the blood?
Away from the heart.
What are the properties of veins?
Elastic fibres but carry low blood pressure, also contain valves to control the direction of the blood.
What do lots of capillaries make?
Veins.
What are the properties of veins?
Thin, one cell think. Exchange materials through cell tissues so also contain a nucleus with small lumen.
What is a lumen?
Hole through a blood vessel, all blood vessel contains one.
How do material exchange by capillaries?
Capillaries carry blood very close to each cells allowing the easy exchange.
