*Breathing&Respiration Flashcards
What is the word equation for respiration
Glucose+Oxygen->water+carbon dioxide +heat energy
What is aerobic respiration
Aerobic respiration is the process of producing cellular energy involving oxygen
Why do we need respiration
Breathing is essential to keep us alive, because every living cell in the body needs a continual supply of oxygen
What do all living organisms do?
RESPIRE
State how breathing occurs in terms of muscle contraction-volume of chest cavity-pressure of air and direction of air flow
Movement – muscle contraction
Making new chemicals
Growth and repair
Moving substances e.g. plants taking minerals in through their roots
Nervous impulses
Temperature regulation – keeping our body at 37oC.”
How are the lungs adapted for purpose
Increased surface area
Good blood flow
Moist
Thin
What are alveoli
tiny air sacs in the lungs which allow for rapid gase exchange
What happens to your breathing during asthma
airways becomes swollen or inflamed and muscles thicken so it makes it difficult to breathe
Why do people smoke
Peer pressure
Because people think it’s cool
Family members might smoke
Because people say it relives stress
How does smoking effect your lungs
“ There are many smoking related diseases. You can develop a disease called Bronchitis Lining of the bronchiole swells due to irritation by bacteria and smoke. Air flow through the bronchioles is restricted Less air reaches the alveoli
Name the main chemicals in smoke and how they effect your body
Nicotine-affects heart, blood vessels and nervous system
Tar- stains teeth and makes fingers yellow
Carbon monoxide- binds to red blood cells better that oxygen
Ammonia- causes strong swelling
How do the lungs get rid of germs and dust breathed in?
Tiny hairs called cilia, covering the walls of the air tubes, move the mucus upward and out into the throat, where it is either coughed up and spat out, or swallowed
