Treatment for mastitis
Flucloxacillin 500mg every 6 hours for 10 - 14 days 30 minutes before food
If the woman has a penicillin allergy, what medication will you prescribe for mastitis?
Erythromycin
What will you prescribe a woman with thrush?
Miconazole 2% cream 2x daily to the nipples (remove before breastfeeding)
What do you prescribe a baby with thrush in the mouth?
Nystatin 100,000 units (1ml) 4x a day for 7 days and continue for 48 hour after lesions resolve
What do you prescribe a baby with thrush on its bottom?
Clotrimazole 1% topical cream apply to area 2 - 3 x daily and continue for 2 weeks after infection resolves
What occurs during lactogenesis I?
Is the production of colostrum that starts 16 weeks pregnant
What occurs during lactogenesis II?
Is the production of transitional milk that is triggered by drop in progesterone after birth, usually occurs around day 3 - 4 to day 10
What occurs during lactogenesis III?
Is the production of mature breast milk around day 10 to 4 - 6 weeks postpartum and is maintained through active removal of breast milk
Predisposing factors to mastitis
Nipple damage, problems with latching, mixed feeding, use of a manual breast pump

15 - 20 lobes

In the alveoli
What do the ductule and lactiferous ducts do?
Transport breast milk to the nipple
What is the composition of colostrum?
High in protein, sodium and minerals, low in fat and calories
What is the composition of mature breast milk?
90% water, 10 % fats, carbs and proteins

Shares immunological characteristics of colostrum and nutritive characteristics of mature milk
