more common younger women 20-40
respond to oestrogen and progesterone

painless smooth round well circumbscribed firm mobile
fibrocystic breast changes
connective tissues, ducts and lobules of breast respond to oestrogen and progersterone
become fibrous and cystic, changes fluctuate with menstrual cycle

symptoms prior to menstruating and resolve once begin period
lumpiness
breast pain (mastalgia)
fluctuating breast size

exclude cancer
wear supportive bra
NSAIDs
avoid caffeine
apply heat to area

benign, individual fluid filled lumps
most common cause of breast lumps

well circumscribed

possibly fluctuant

further assessment to exclude cancer
*may slightly increase risk of breast cancer
fat necrosis
benign lump due to local degeneration and scarring of fat tissue in breast
fat necrosis - what happens
commonly triggered by trauma, radiotherapy or surgery
inflammatory reaction resulting in fibrosis and necrosis of fat tissue
fat necrosis - OE
painless firm irregular fixed in local structures may be skin dimpling or nipple inveresion
lipoma
benign tissue of adipose tissue
lipoma OE
soft
painless
mobile
no skin changes
