tail of Spence
Area of breast tissue that extends laterally across the anterior axillary fold
Arterial Supply of the breast
Each Breast receives branches of 1. Internal mammary artery 2. Posterior intercostal arteries 3. axillary artery \+ Medial mammary arteries (fr 3,4,5 anterior intercostal a.) and lateral mammary arteries (fr. lateral thoracic)
Lymph from the tail of Spence drains where?
subscapular axillary nodes
Lymph from the upper portion of the breast drains where?
infra clavicular nodes
Lymph from the medial breast drains where?
mediastinal nodes
internal thoracic nodes
opposite breast lymph plexus
Lymph from the inferior of the breast drains where?
abdominal wall lymph
extra peritoneal lymph plexus
Lymph from the subareolar and sub mammary plexus drains where?
anterior or pectoral group of axillary lymph nodes
when is the optimal time to examine the breast
5-7 days following the LMP
Palpation Position
Pt supine with ipsilateral hand above head
Palpation technique
vertical strips or spiraling, use finger pads and flatten breast tissue against chest wall. Motion should be continuous, the entire breast should be done by quadrant including the tail of spence. Use three levels of pressure
