Breast disease Flashcards
When is an axillary node clearance indicated?
In patients with breast cancer undergoing breast conserving surgery with adjuvant radiotherapy if, at sentinel node biopsy, more 3 or more involved nodes are found then axillary node clearance is indicated
What treatment should women have after wide local excision?
Whole breast radiotherapy is recommended after a woman has had a wide-local excision as this may reduce the risk of recurrence by around two-thirds
What is NACT?
Neo-adjuvant chemotherapy
What is the most common type of breast cancer?
Invasive ductal carcinoma (no special type) is the most common type of breast cancer
What is the snowstorm sign?
A marker of silicone implant rupture
What is the triple assessment for breast cancer?
Examination + imaging + biopsy
What are radial scars?
A benign (not cancer) area of hardened tissue in the breast that looks like a scar when viewed under a microscope. Radial scars often occur in both breasts, and more than one lesion is usually present in each breast.
What cancer does BRCA2 increase risk of?
Prostate, pancreatic and gastric cancer
What is the difference between invasive ductal carcinoma and invasive lobular carcinoma in situ?
Ductal carcinoma is easier to pick up via imaging and lobular often is not picked up. Ductal is more likely to be a discrete mass whereas lobular is more likely to have nipple changes and thickened skin.
