Side effects of tamoxifene
risk for VTE is increased 2-3x
(increased risk in 1st two years of therapy and in those who will have prolonged immobolization due to travel or surgery).
management of someone going to get hip surgery and has been on tamoxifene for breast cancer
need to stop tamoxifene 2-4 weeks prior to surgery that has moderate to high risk for VTE (hip replacement)
low risk procedures for VTE don’t need to stop tamoxifene.
when do we use tamoxifene?
as adjuvant endocrine therapy for non metastatic estrogen receptor positive breast cancer
- 1st line therapy for premenopausal women and can be used in post menopausal women who have intolerable side effects (joint pain) from, or contraindications to, aromatase inhibitors.
