Breast Benign Tumors/Fibrocystic Changes Flashcards
Fibrocystic Change (demographic, gross)
Most common change in premenopausal breast, blue dome appearance
Different Fibrocystic Changes (overall and 3-6 specific) and Cancer Risk
Overall benign, but some have increased risk for cancers (in both breasts, not just observed)
- Fibrosis, cysts, and APOCRINE METAPLASIA - NO RISK
- Ductal hyperplasia and sclerosing adenosis (too many glands. Often calcified) - some risk
- Atypical hyperplasia - 5x increased risk
Intraductal Papilloma Presentation, and Histo/Age Differentiation with Papillary Carcinoma
Bloody nipple discharge in premenopausal women (carcinoma is post). Has BOTH luminal and myoepithelial cell layers, as opposed to carcinoma having just luminal

Fibroadenoma Demographic/Presentation, Hormones, Cancer Risk
Most common tumor in premenopausal, well circumscribed marble like mass
E sensitive so grows in pregnancy and maybe painful in menstrual cycle
Benign. No risk of cancer
Phyllodes Tumor
Fibroadenoma-like mass with overgrowth of fibrous component so get “leaf-like” projections. Usually postmenopausal and can be malignant
