What is the external anatomy of the breast?
Montgomerys glands
What is the breast composed of and when does the composition change?
Fat and glandular tissue
Pregnancy - glandular tissue becomes more
Menopause - Glands retract and fat can increase or decrease
What are the ducts of the breast called?
Lactiferous ducts
What do the ducts open out to?
Lactiferous sinus
Where does the milk come from?
Alveolar (gland lobules)
What muscles does the breast attach to?
Pec major
What holds the breast in place and how does this change?
Suspensory ligament (coopers ligament)
It gets pulled during pregnancy and gets more slack as age progresses
What is the blood supply to the breast?
Lateral - Lateral thoracic artery via axillary
Medial - Internal thoracic (mammory) artery
What are the main lymph nodes for the breast?
Axillary
What are the five groups of axillary lymph nodes?
Anterior (pectoral)
Posterior
Lateral
Central Apical
Where can tumours go that is not the main lymph nodes?
Parasternal
Other breast
Supraclavicular
Infraclavicular
What is a problem with a total node clearance?
Lymphodema
What is the alternative to a total node clearance and how is it performed?
Sentinal node biopsy
Inject dye to tumour and see if the nearest node is blue
