Breast Cyst
Common >35yrs
Especially perimenopausal
Benign fluid filled rounded lump
Not fixed to surrounding tissue
Occasionally painful
Fluctuant
May resolve or aspirate (diagnosis confirmed on examination)
Ductal disease
Duct Ectasia
Typically around menopause
Ducts become blocked and secretion is stagnant
Present with nipple discharge (green/brown/bloody) + or - nipple retraction + or - lump
Refer for confirmation of diagnosis and usually no treamtent needed.
Fibroadenoma
Usually presents in <30 yrs but can occur up to menopause
benign growth
firm
mobile
painless, smooth, well defined. may be multiple
1/3 regress
1/3 stay the same
1/3 get bigger
Observation and reassurance, but in doubt refer for USS (and FNA)
Surgical excision if large
Fine needle aspiration
Diagnostic procedure used to investigate lumps or masses.
Indications: cysts, nodes or masses, enlarged lymph nodes
Complications: bleeding, infection rare
Mastitis/breast abscesses
Mastitis -Inflammation of breast tissue
Painful, erythematous, hot swelling
Antibiotics and open incision or percutaneous drainage if abscess.
Acute Mastitis

Periductal Mastitis
smoker non lactating lady
Breast abscess
febrile, painful
hot, red swelling
Breast cancer
painless, immobile, irregular hard lump, peau orange, axillary lymphadenopathy
