Brainstem Flashcards

1
Q

What are the 3 main fxns of the brainstem?

A

1) conduit (ascending and descending pathways pass through)
2) integrative functions (control respiration, cardiovascular activity)
3) hosts cranial nerves (cranial nerve nuclei are here)

Q

What causes a coma vs. a vegetative state?

A

A coma is caused by damage to the reticular formation - have no response to stimulation (unconscious)

A vegetative state is caused by extensive cortical damage - still have a sleep wake cycle and may respond to stimuli but lack cognitive fxn (technically unconscious)
