brain tumors Flashcards
what is a tumor
mass of cells, uncontrolled growth with no useful functions
cancerous tumor
no distinct boundaries, + the cells breaks off to go to different part of the body to start a new tumor.
what is metastasize
it’s when the cells break off and goes to different part of the body to start a new tumor
non cancerous tumor
have a distinct boundary
it’s incapsulated
the cells of the tumor doesnt interact with the outside (cuz it’s encapsulated.)
you can usually remove it safely.
infiltrative
only for malignant:
when the tumor is removed, some cells may still be there. meaning risk of regrowth.
encapsulated tumor can still cause damage (compression) (for both malignant and benign
it can press on the brain (pressurized rbrain damage or occlude necessary things for tissue
neurons are mature cells meaning…
they can’t divide nor produce tumors
