Brain Death (Adult) Flashcards
This refers to permanent cessation of all vital functions including cardiac and respiratory function; brain death may be included.
Death
A condition in which all the higher functions are lost with some evident brainstem functions.
Pesistent Vegetative State
Irreversible loss of function of the brain including the brainstem
Brain death
This is the strongest evidence a health practitioner has to follow in terms of the treatment preferences of the patient especially when the patient is unable to communicate his or her wishes anymore.
Advance Directives
Uniform Determination of Death Act (UDDA) includes the following except:
A. irreversible cessation of circulatory function
B. reversibility of respiratory function
C. irreversible cessation of all functions of the entire brain
D. brainstem is dead
B
Clinical evaluation prerequisites according to AAN Practice Parameters include: A. Coma is irreversible B. Known cause of coma C. Coma in neuroimaging D. AOTA
D
What is AAN?
American Academy of Neurology
AAN Practice Parameters Clinical Evaluation Prerequisites: What to rule out? (5)
Drug overdose Endocrine abnormalities Acid-Base and Electrolyte Imbalances Hypothermia Decreased Blood pressure
The most important consideration prior to performing the oculocephalic reflex:
A. observe for the eye movement
B. order for an x-ray of the vertebral column, especially the cervical spine
C. check for fast or jerking movement of nystagmus
D. turn the head from side to side
B
Which among the following elicits a POSITIVE Doll’s eye reflex?
A. Turning the head on the right side will enable the eyeballs to be fixed on the right side.
B. Turning the head on the right side will deviate the eyeballs to an upward gaze.
C. Turning the head on the left side will leave the eyeballs looking on the right side.
D. Turning the head on the left side will deviate the eyeballs to a downward gaze.
C
Which of the ff will elicit a POSITIVE oculovestibular reflex?
A. A warm water injection on the left ear will allow slow movement of the eyes towards the left side and a jerking movement towards the right side.
B. A warm water injection on the right ear will allow slow movement on the right ear and a jerking movement of the eyeball towards the left ear
C. A cold water injection on the right ear will allow slow movement of the eyes towards the left side and a jerking movement towards the right side
D. A cold water injection on the left ear will allow slow movement of the eyes towards the left side and a jerking movement towards the right side.
D
Process of inserting a catether top the patient’s blood vessel in order to administer a dye to the cerebral vascular structures; absence of the Circle of Willis confirms coma
Cerebral angiogram
Electrocerebral silence in a patient with coma
Electroencephalogram
Test that measures cerebral metabolism
Cerebral Scintigraphy
May reveal movement of the different blood vessels or may elicit reversal of flow in diastole a.k.a “to-fro” flow pattern or systolic spike waveforms
A. Cerebral angiogram
B. Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound
C. Cerebral Scintigraphy
