What are the accepted clinical criteria for brain death
A
- Unresponsive: GCS 3/15
- TOFC 40mV to rule out neuromuscular blockade
- Absent Brainstem reflexes
- Apnoea test positive
- Two doctors - independent with > 5 years experience

How is the apnoea test performed
A
- Preoxygenate
- Disconnect ventilator –> PaCO2 > 8.0 kPa and pH <7.3
OR
increase in PaCO2 by 2.6 kPa if COPD/CO2 retainer
If no breath is taken at this point = positive apnoea test

A
After the second examination
