Brain conditions Flashcards
Epilepsy , symptoms?
is a common neurological condition where there is a tendency towards spontaneous firing of neurons (activation of AP) within a specific region of the cortex.
Symptoms and signs depend on the regions of the brain affected by this abnormal ‘firing’, which may remain local to the focus of origin, or spread to involve the whole hemisphere or even both hemispheres
what is generalised tonic-clonic epilepsy
most common type!
When both hemispheres are involved it can lead to a more severe form of epilepsy
epilepsy treatment (other than oral)
Seizures may spread rapidly from one hemisphere to tohe r by the corpus callosum
severing it reduces this spread.
Within what structure of the central nervous system is this tumour and in which cranial fossa is it located?
clinical signs ? and on which side of the body?
Right cerebellar hemisphere
loss of ability to coordiante actions on the RIGHT SIDE (ipsilateral to lesion)
WE see cerebellar sign on the SAME SIDE OF THE LESION!
cerebellum is ipsilateral!
cerebellar dysfunctions signs
DANISH
- ataxia
- dysarthria and scanning speech
- dysmetria (past-pointing)
- hypotonia
- dysdiadochokinesia (difficulty in carrying our rapid, alternating movements)
- inability to learn new movements
- coarse nystagmus
if lesion occured in the Vermis (central cerebellum) what symtoms would they ahve?
symtoms will present centrally, w/in the trunk
alchohol affects the cerebellum>> drunk perosn looses balance
Other than motor weakness and paraesthesia involving the left half of Arnold’s face and left arm there are no other neurological signs found. The doctor suspects a stroke.
which area in the lobes of Arnold’s brain has been affected by the stroke, and on which side?
Right >> frontal and parietal!
