Brain composition Flashcards
What are the three subdivisions of the brain and what do they contain?
1) Hindbrain: cerebellum, medulla oblongata, pons, and reticular formation
2) Midbrain: inferior and superior colliculi
3) Forebrain: thalamus, hypothalamus, basal ganglia, limbic system, cerebral cortex
Thalamus:
relay station for sensory information (except for smell)
Hypothalamus:
maintains homeostasis and integrates with the endocrine system through the hypophyseal portal system that connects it to the anterior pituitary
Basal ganglia:
smooth movements and help postural integrity (schizophrenia, parkinson)
Limbic system:
contains septal nuclei, amygdala, hippocampus, controls emotion and memory
Septal nuclei:
feelings of pleasure, pleasure-seeking behavior, and addicition
Amygdala:
controls fear and aggression
Hippocampus:
consolidates memories and communicates with other parts of the limbic system through the fornix
Four sections of the cerebral cortex:
1) Frontal
2) Parietal
3) Occipital
4) Temporal
Frontal lobe:
controls executive function, impulse control, long-term planning, motor function, speech (Brocas area)
Parietal lobe:
controls sensations of touch, pressure, temperature, and pain. spatial processing, orientation and manipulation
occipital lobe
controls visual processing
Temporal lobe
controls sound processing, speech perception (Wernicke’s area), memory, and emotion
Dopamine:
maintains smooth movements and posture
GABA
Brain stabilizer
