Brain and Neuropsychology Flashcards
how our brain functions
What is a neuron?
A neuron is a nerve cell that is the basic building block of the nervous system.
Define synapse.
A synapse is the junction between two neurons, where neurotransmitters are released to transmit impulses.
What are neurotransmitters?
Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that transmit signals across a synapse from one neuron to another.
What comprises the central nervous system (CNS)?
The brain and spinal cord.
What is the peripheral nervous system (PNS) composed of?
The PNS consists of all the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord.
Explain the function of the frontal lobe.
The frontal lobe is involved in executive functions such as decision making, problem-solving, and controlling behaviour.
What role does the hippocampus play in the brain?
The hippocampus is crucial for the formation of new memories.
Describe the function of the amygdala.
The amygdala is involved in processing emotions, particularly fear and pleasure.
What is neuroplasticity?
Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life.
