more rapidly than tumors
more frequently affect meningeal structures

when microorganisms reach the brain and cause a local infection

may be only one area of abscess or many areas may be infected
–> b/c of the spread by blood borne pathogens
what influences initial symptoms
site and size of the abscess
increased ICP is common too
risk factors
may develop from other infections in the cranium such as sinusitis
people with compromised immune systems or receiving steroids
recent head trauma
what is there around the abscess
area of cerebral edema
clin man
if increased ICP –> neck pain
headache
disturbed consciousness
fever
nuchal rigidity
vomiting
szs
visual disturbances
dysarthria
hemiparesis
sepsis
most common symptoms
headache
