Brain Flashcards
What is psycho-biology
Explains behavior in relation to biological mechanisms
Biology influences behavior; Environment influences biology
What is neuroscience?
Behavior and brain function determined by: 1. social cognitive variables 2. Biological factors
What is the brain
3.5 pounds of nervous tissue
What are the 3 main layers of the brain
Central core
Limbic system
Cerebral cortex
What are the 5 structures of the central core
Medulla pons thalumus Reticular activating system cerebellum
Where and what is the medulla?
marks the transition from spinal cord to brain stem
controls vital functions(reflexes, Hr, respiration, digestion)
where and what is the pons
Large bulge above medulla connects to cerebellum
contains RAS reticular activating system which regulates sleep
Where and what is the Thalumus
deep within brain
receives sensory info and transmits in to other parts
Where and what are the cerebellum
located behind the medulla
Effects motor responses; balance, ability to coordinate movement
What are the 3 structures of the Limbic system
Amygdala
Hippocampus
Hypothalumus
where and what is the Amygdala?
Located deep in temporal lobe
controls rage
interpretation of emotional importance
Where and what is the Hippocampus
Located in the temporal lobe
plays role in formation of long term memory
Where and what is the Hypothalamus
Below thalamus,
maintains stable state
regulates hormonal system
what makes up the cerebral cortex?
frontal
parietal
temporal
occipital lobes
where and what is the frontal lobe?
located at the front of central fissure.
Controls thought, problem solving, memory and behavior
