Brain 6-7 Flashcards
limbic system
- functions as emotional center
- formation of memories
- pleasure for food and sex
structures of the limbic system
1-hypocampus
2-amygdala
hypocampus
cognition and facial memory. important for learning and training.
amygdala
involved in cognitive processes and memory associated with emotions.
Reticular Activating System
Modulates brain arousal. Maintains posture, balance, muscle tone, pain, and sleep.
Reward Center
Has 5 brain structures; nucleus accumbens, ventral tegmental area, amygdala, septal nuclei and medial forebrain bundle
nucleus accumbens
Makes dopamine (pleasure) and serotonin (calming).
ventral tegmental area
Responds to unexpected rewards, also makes dopamine, but it can make too much which can prevent their breakdown.
septal nuclei
Connects to the nucleus accumbens. Distinguishes love vs lust and appropriate vs inappropriate.
medial forebrain bundle
Carries information between the ventral tegmental and the nucleus accumbens.
4 factors that determine addictiveness
- highly stimulating artificial version
- limitless supply
- variety
- causes binging
Why is pornography so addictive?
Because it has each of the addictive factors.
Why does the body adjust to addiction?
Because it adjusts to the amounts of dopamine released and it needs more and more to get the same effect as the first time.
