Q

The more inferior cord segments in brachial plexus supply what muscles?

Describe the topography of the 5 Major branches of the brachial plexus

A

The more distal muscles

  • MSC nerve runs laterally into anterior arm
  • Axillary+radial nerves run posteriorly to supply extensors
  • Median nerve runs down centre of limb
  • Ulnar nerve runs medially down upper limb

16
Q

What nerve roots of Brachial Plexus can be affected by Traction injuries

A

Upper Roots: C5 and C6

Lower Roots: C8 and T1

17
Q

What are the usual causes of injuries to the Upper Brachial Plexus

A

Excessive increase in angle between neck and shoulder (Trauma or at birth)

18
Q

What is Erb’s palsy

How does it present

A

A condition resulting in arm paralysis caused by injury to upper brachial plexus

Presents with “Waiter’s Tip”

  • Limbs hangs medially rotated
  • Adducted arm
  • Extended elbow
19
Q

What are the usual causes of injuries to the Lower Brachial Plexus

A

Due to forced hyperextension or hyperabduction

(Grabbing a tree branch on the way down while falling)

(Baby’s arm is delivered first and traction applied to arm)

20
Q

What is Klumpe’s Palsy

How does it present

A

Condition resulting in paralysis of forearm and hand, caused by injury to lower brachial plexus

Clawed appearance of hand
(Flexed IP joints, Hyperexteded MCP joints, Abducted thumb)
