Brachial Plexus Flashcards
describe the axillae
- pyramidal structure
- floor is the armpit skin (axillary fascia)
- later wall is the humerus
- medial wall is the thoracic wall
- apex is the lateral border of first rib, superior border of scapula and posterior border of clavicle
- anterior wall is the pectoralis major , minor and subclavicus
- posterior wall is the latissimus dosi, therest major and subscapularis
movements of the upper lim
- abduct the arm at the glenohumeral joint , this is controlled by C5(musculocutaneous nerve)
where are the testing points of the different spinal cords of upper limb for sensation
- C5 bicep
- 6 = thumb, (palmar of thumb)
- 7=index finger pad (tip)
- 8 = little finger pad
- T1 = elbow
testing the nerve roots for movement
- C5 = abduct the shoulder
- 6 = flexion of the forearm
- 7 extension of the forearm
- 8=flexion of fingers
- T1= abduction and adduction of the digits ( fingers excluding the thumb)
what do you do with an unconscious patient
- tap the tendon in the curtail fossa for C6
- and tap the tricep posterior to the elbow for C7
whats evaluating the nerves of the brachial plexus got to do with breathing
-C4 one of the nerves associated with innervating the diaphragm is just above the plexus so damage to plexus possible damage to breathing
(C456 keep diaphragm and pericardium alive)
what does the axillary innervate and contain
- C5 6
- the delotid and the cutaneous region of the shoulder
what does the musculocutaneous innervate and contain
- C5 C6 C7
- goes into the anterior compartment of the arm and runs obliquely (anteriorly) through the forearm supplying it
what does the median nerve innervate and contain
- C6 7 8 T1
- comes of the lateral and medial cords and has a lateral and medial head and supplies the elbow, radioulnar , wrist and thumb and half the ring finger
what does the radial nerve supply and contain
- C 5 6 7 8 T1
- comes from the posterior cord and runs behind the humerus all the way along lateral boarder , superior to the lateral humorous epicondyle supplying the lateral cutaneous arm and the posterior forearm
what does the ulnar nerve innervate and contain
T1 C8
-medial aspect of the arm and forearm and little finger half the ring finger
- anterior compartment of the arm IN?
- posterior compartment ?
- shoulder?
- intrinsic hand i.e?
- lateral 2 lumbrical muscle =
- themar muscle =
- 2 medial lumbrical muscle =
- lateral half of the flexor digitorium =
- musculocutanous
- radial
- axillary
- lateral 2 lumbrical muscle = median
- thenar muscle = median
- 2 medial lumbrical muscle = ulnar
- lateral half of the flexor digitorium = median
describe 3 nerves and their relation to bones
- AXILLARY comes from the lateral cord and runs posteriorly to the humerus head (surgical head)supply the major abductor deltoid muscle
- RADIAL comes off the posterior cord, runs posterior to the humorous then travels superior to the lateral epicondyle of the humerus and runs along the lateral aspect of the radius bone
- ULNAR comes for the medial cord runs medial to the humorous relatively and runs posterior the medial epicondyle along the ulna bone
damage to the humerus bone affects what nerve (s)
- axillary
- ulnar
- radial
