Bowlbys Theory Of Meternal Deprivation Flashcards
What is maternal deprivation?
Prolonged separation from mother during critical period of 2 1/2 years.
What does maternal deprivation lead to
- Negative impact on Emotional , social, physical, intellectual development (mental retardation-abnormally low IQ)
- Continuity hypothesis: prolonged separation = issues in adult hood
- and impact internal working model, unable to be good parent
- effectionless psychopathy: inability to experience emotions or guilt
Outline 44 thieves study
Interviews 44 Juvenal thieves and 44 ‘normal’ kids
14 thieves showed affectionless psychopathy and 86% of the 14 experienced maternal deprivation in Critical period (2 1/2 years)
-shows link between affectionless psychopathy and maternal deprivation not cause and effect though
Evaluation of 44 theives study
- beta bias- don’t know effects of girls
- results are correlational no cause or effect other factors could have caused later problems eg poverty
- can’t explain two of the ‘normal’ kids who weren’t labelled affectionless psychopaths but experienced maternal dep in critical period.
- too deterministic
- impact on child care practices
Outline Robertsons PDD model
Studied 5 kids in care while mum was in hospital
- provided great substitute mothering and arranged visits with mum
- children coped well with separation and happy on mums return
Stages on separation
Protest- outward display of sadness, cry, refuse comfort.
Despair-hopelessness doesn’t think parent will return , withdrawn, self sooth
Detachment-accept comfort from others. Rejects mother at return no emotional bond.
