Bowlbys theory

A

¥ Attachment crucial for survival, without it new-borns will die
¥ Born with innate tendency to form attachment, increases chances of survival
¥ Reciprocal so adults also innately programmed
¥ Infants and carers stay close, helps survival so has long term benefits
¥ Attachment is an adaptive behaviour

Critical Period

A
  • Limited window when attachment can occur
  • Development of all biological systems takes place most easily and most rapidly during a critical period
  • Bowlby thought critical period was between three and six months and that after this time it should not be possible for attachments to occur
