Bowlbys theory
A
¥ Attachment crucial for survival, without it new-borns will die
¥ Born with innate tendency to form attachment, increases chances of survival
¥ Reciprocal so adults also innately programmed
¥ Infants and carers stay close, helps survival so has long term benefits
¥ Attachment is an adaptive behaviour

Critical Period
A
- Limited window when attachment can occur
- Development of all biological systems takes place most easily and most rapidly during a critical period
- Bowlby thought critical period was between three and six months and that after this time it should not be possible for attachments to occur

- Bias towards one person is called monotropy

- Children know there is someone there and so are happy to explore
Understand there is somewhere safe for them to return to if they feel threatened

A
- Child forms expectations about what all relationships will be like
- Trust vs. uncertainty, consistency vs. inconsistency
- Uses experiences to develop a model about what relationships are like
