Emotions can affect elimination pattern, such as stress. Soma causes body image disturbances and embarrassment. self-esteem issues.
Physiological alterations
Constipation- bowel incontinence, diarrhea
Nursing implications for diagnostic tests
Colonoscopy- clear liquids, bowel cleanser (GoLytely, enemas). Upper GI- NPO after midnight, increase fluids, no metallic objects.
Interventions to promote normal elimination
Encourage fluid intake, fruit juice and water, encourage activity, add wheat bran or fiber to diet, provide laxative or stool softener, provide privacy while voiding.
Care for bowel diversion
maintain skin integrity, irrigating a colostomy, secure pouch correctly, nutritional considerations,
