refers to secretion and excretion of body wastes from the intestines
Bowel Elimination
what are the anatomical parts involved in bowel elimination?
mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, anus, defecation
food mixes with saliva and creates a bolus and then food is swallowed, enzymes actually start breaking down the food here
mouth
secretes mucus and facilitates movement of the food to the stomach
esophagus
1 inch in diameter and about 28 feet long, secretes amylase, lactose, lipase, made up of the cecum, ileum, duodenum, jejunum
small intestine
prevents the backflow of material from the ileum
chyme
two and half inches in diameter and about five and half feet long; job is to absorb water and sodium and excrete feces
large intestine
bowel movement; expulsion of feces from the anus and rectum
defecation
waste product normally brown in color
feces
wave like movements produced by muscle fibers to propel feces forward
peristalsis
gas; about 7-10 liters of gas in the large intestine in a span of 24 hours
flatus
movement of the chyme
haustral churning
increased peristalsis of the colon right after eating food (right after this happens diarrhea tends to follow)
gastrocolic reflex
what are the factors affecting bowel elimination?
age, diet, fluid intake, physical activity, psychological factors, personal habits, position during defecation, pain, pregnancy, surgery and anesthesia, medications, diagnostic tests
when assessing somone’s bowel elimination what questions should you ask?
describe a normal stool size, color, etc? how frequent do you defecate? any bowl diversions? diet history - has there been any change in diet? exercise? daily fluid intake? history of surgery? medication history?
