adsorbents purpose
coat wall of GI, eliminate toxin thru poop
mild cases of diarrhea
atropine, hyoscyamine
(antichol.) severe cases of diarrhea, decreases peristalsis (se: dry mouth)
opiates (loperamide)
severe cases of diarrhea (inhibits peristalsis)
probiotics (lactobacillus)
supply missing bacteria to GI tract, suppresses growth of bacteria causing diarrhea
laxitives
cause electrolyte imbalances, dont crush, dont take if N/V/ abdominal cramps
bulk forming (psyllium, methylcellulose)
acute + chronic constipation, IBS, diverticulosis
emollients (docusate salts, mineral oil)
treats acute and chronic constipation and fecal impactions
hyperosmotic/ osmotic (sorbitol, glycerin)
increase water in stool, treats chronic constipation, main laxative given pre-op
lactulose
reduce elevated ammonia levels
saline laxatives
increase osmotic pressure in GI causing more water to enter the intestines making stools soft
stimulant (senna, bisacodyl)
only acute constipation, stimulate peristalsis (give w water on empty stomach)
