neutralize stomach acid

cause constipation, can give to pt’s w renal disease

risk of metabolic alkalosis
h2 antagonists
increase the pH of the stomach (alkalinity)
cimetidine
adverse: impotence and gynecomastia, potential to cause drug interactions
proton pump inhibitors (PPI’s)
acts on proton pump of parietal cells
treats H. pylori infections for ulcers, GERD, erosive esophagitis, NSAID induced ulcers, stress ulcers
(osteoporosis in long term use)
lansoprazole
(PPI), can be opened and mixed no crushing, take w/ apple juice
omeprazole
(PPI) take whole (no crushing, opening, or chewing) give 30-60 min before meals
pantoprazole
for GERD and a damaged esophagus
sucralfate
(PPI) mucosal protection, delays PPI absorption
misoprostol (cytotec)
decrease ulcers in PTs taking NSAIDs, also prevents GI bleeds and gastric secretions
