vitamin A
for night and normal vision, used as isotretinoin (dont take supplements containing beta carotine while on isotretinoin)
vitamin b1 (thiamine)
beriberi + wernicke’s encephalopathy
vitamin B2 (riboflavin)
excess vitamin causes yellow/orange pee
vitamin b3 (niacin)
treats hyperlipidemia, needed for metabolic processes
vitamin b6 (pyroxidine)
for metabolic functions, isoniazid can cause vitamin deficiency
vitamin b12 (cyanocobalamin)
for metabolic pathways, deficiency causes pernicious anemia
vitamin c
megadoses can cause n/v, abdomen cramps, acid urine, possible stone formation
vitamin d
need for calcium and phosphorus absorption into bones
vitamin e
antioxidants
vitamin K
synthesized in intestinal flora, needed for blood clotting
hypocalcemia
infantile rickets, adult osteomalacia, osteoporosis
hypomagnesemia
d/t malabsorption, alcoholism, long term IV feeds, diuretics and PPI’s, hyperthyroidism, DKA
