Bovine Therio 3 Part 1 Heat Detection Flashcards
The success of AI in bovine depends on (2)
The use of proven sires
Reliable oestrus detection
What are some behavioral indications of oestrus
Both Cows: Chin resting, Licking, Bunting
Cow in oestrus: Sniffing vulva of other cows, Mounting head to head, Stand to be mounted
What length of time do cows spend coming into heat and what are some signs observed during this time
6-24hrs (8hrs)
Stands and bellows Sniffs other cows Headbutts other cows Attempt to ride other cows Will not stand to be mounted Red, moist, slight swollen vulva with clear mucous discharge
What length of time do cows spend in standing heat and what are some signs observed during this time
6-18hrs (12-18)
Stand to be mounted
Rides other cows
Bellows frequently
Nervous and excitable
What length of time do cows spend going out of heat and what are some signs observed during this time
12-24hrs (14+)
Attempts to ride other cows
Will not stand to be mounted
Smells other cows
Clear mucous discharge from vulva
What are some recommendations one can do to accurately detect bovine heat via observation
Watch cows 3 times daily (Early in the morning before milking, early afternoon and late evening) approx. 30mins each
Watch when other activity is minimal i.e. not at milking/feeding
Cows should be familiar with observer
Move through the herd quietly as you detect
Area for detection should be large enough to allow the cows to mingle freely, but small enough so all of them can be watched at once
What are some requirements for the accurate detection of heat in cattle
A dedicated person for heat detection
A backup person
Implement an animal numbering system
Watch for animal grouping activity…cattle approaching heat commonly congregate together
What are some cattle heat detection aids
Pedometers Tail painting Chinballs Record keeping Videotapping Teaser animals Milk progesterone
