Bovine Neonatology Flashcards
Dry cows
Not actively being milked (resting period)
1. Nutrition: Highly quality
2. Good housing (sand & grass, no hard dirt with debris)
3. Health: Ideal BCS, current on vax, eval/tx for mastitis
Maternity pen
- Clean dry area
- No overcrowded
- Ventilation & lighting
- Remove bedding & disinfect
- Tools within reach (lube, sleeves, chains, ect)
What does the calf need immediately after birth?
- Stim breathing
- Rub vigorously
- Straw in nostril
- Sit sternal
- DO NOT hang by rear legs!!
Calf vitals:
Temp
Pulse
RR
MM
CRT
- Temp:
- 102-103 F at birth
- 101-102 within 1hr - PR: 100-150bpm
- RR: 50-75bpm
- MM: Pale pink to pink
- CRT: <3 sec
Newborn care
- Dip navel (umbilical cord)
- Iodine (less common now)
- 2% chlorhexiderm - “3 peat” For dipping
- At birth
- 2nd colostrum (6-12hr post)
- Next feeding - Vaccines (couple hrs after birth?)
Colostrum should meet…
- Quickness: How fast post birth
- Quantity: Goal of 1 gallon
- Quality: High IgG
- Cleanliness: Free of bacteria
Give an example of a species that can do transplacentral transfer and one that cannot
- Can:
Primates & rodents - Cannot:
Cattle, sheep, horses, & pigs
T/F: Failure of passive transfer increases the risk of neonatal disease if they do not receive at least <10mg/mL IgG in the colostrum
True!!
There is a ___% decline every 12 hours of life of a calf absorbing colostrum
50%
Give two reasons why it’s important calves get colostrum ASAP?
- Ability to absorb IgG and colostrum itself
- Exposure to bacteria without the proper passive immunity to protect them
What are “the goods” in colostrum? (5)
- IgG
- Leukocytes (not found in frozen colostrum)
- Growth factors, hormones, protein
- Passive transfer of immunity (antibodies)
- Calories
Colostrometer
What does it do?
- Reads quality of colostrum
- Green means go! - Room temperature is better accuracy
- Record quality and date
- Highest quality is saved for heifers
Colostrum can be measured on… (2)
- Clostrometer
- Refractometer
Adverse effects of contaminated colostrum being fed to calves (3)
- Interfere with IgG absorption
- Increase rate of closure
- Direct transfer of disease from cow to calf
What/how to clean equipment for getting colostrum? (4)
- Rinse with lukewarm water
- Wash with hot H2O, detergent, bleach, & brush
- Rinse with acid (skip step for cow teat)
- Dry
