utilised directly today to accomplish a specific goal such as word processing, calculations, and surfing, eg. Microsoft Word, iTunes.
“killer” application
an application software that becomes so essential that large numbers of people will buy a device just to run that application, eg. the spreadsheet in 1979.
productivity software
allows office employees to complete their daily work efficiently. these applications often come packed together, eg. Microsoft Office.
word processing
users can create and edit documents using this class of software. functions include the ability to type and edit text, format fonts and paragraphs, add, move, and delete text throughout the document, eg. Word.
spreadsheet
provides a way to do numeric calculations and analysis in rows and columns, eg. Microsoft Excel.
presentation
provides for the creation of slideshow presentations that can be projected on a screen, eg. Microsoft PowerPoint.
OneNote
an information-gathering collaboration tool.
utility software
includes software that allows you to fix or modify your computer in some kind of way, eg. antivirus software.
programming software
purpose is to produce more software. most of such programs provide developers with an environment in which they can write the code, test it, and convert/compile it into the format that can be run on a computer.
enterprise resource planning (ERP) system
developed to bring together an entire organisation in one software application. it is a software application which utilises a central database that is implemented throughout the entire organisation.
customer relationship management (CRM) system
manages an organisation’s customers. it can allow a business to personalise its relationship with each of its customers.
Supply Chain Management (SCM) system
handles the interconnection between the links in the supply chain as well as the inventory of the products in various stages of development.
