Born Haber Cycles Flashcards
1
Q
Enthalph changes of (Sublimation, Dissociation, Formation)
A
Sublimation is M(s) to M(g)
Dissociation is X2(g) to 2X(g)
Enthalpy change of formation is the enthalpy change to form MX(s) from M(s) + 0.5X2(g). In other words, form the compound from its constituent elements in their standard states
2
Q
Ionisation Energy
Electron affinity
Lattice energy
A
Ie = ionisation energy and is endo thermic (taking off an electron to make it a cation)
Ea = electron affinity is exothermic (adding an electron to make it an anion)
UL = Lattice energy is exothermic (formation of compound from consitiuent elements in their gaseous states)
