What are psychoactive drugs?
They influence subjective experience and behavior by messing with the nervous system.
What is cross tolerance?
A drug that produces tolerance to other drugs that act in a similar way.
What is metabolic tolerance?
Results from less of the drug making its way to the site of action.
What is functional tolerance?
Results from less reactivity at site of action.
What is contingent drug tolerance?
Tolerance only develops to drug effects that are actually experienced.
What is conditioned drug tolerance?
Tolerance is maximized when the drug is taken in the same context every time. (Situational specificity of drug tolerance.)
What is cirrhosis?
Extensive scarring of the liver due to alcohol.
What are dopamine transporters?
Molecules that normally remove dopamine from synapses, give it back to presynaptic neuron.
What is the substantia nigra?
A midbrain nuclei, cell bodies of dopamine system.
What is the nucleus accumbens?
A nucleus, axons of dopamine system.
What is the Meso-corticolimbic pathway?
Axons of dopamine system neurons that project to cortical and limbus sites. Intracranial self-stimulation.
What is positive-incentive value Vs hedonic value?
Anticipated pleasure Vs actual pleasure experienced.
What is aphasia?
Deficit in ability to produce or comprehend language caused by brain damage
What is the Broca’s area?
Responsible for speech
What is apraxia?
Difficult performing movements out of context, but can do them if not thinking about it.
