Book 29 Ventilation Flashcards
what is ventilation?
the systematic removal of heat, smoke, and fire gases from a structure
Effective ventilation will accomplish 4 objectives
save lives
assist in firefighter access
control the horizontal spread of fire
reduce the possibility of flashover or backdraft
Save lives
-increase the chances of survival to trapped or unconscious occupants
-makes interior conditions safer for firefighters and improves visibility for rescue
Firefighter access
-permits firefighters to safely and more rapidly locate and extinguish the fire
-reduces heat and improves visibility
Control the horizontal fire spread
-heat, smoke, and fire gasses will accumulate at the highest point of the structure and bank down laterally (mushrooming)
-proper ventilation will reduce mushrooming which will reduce the rate of fire spread
Reduces the possibility of flashover and backdraft
FLASHOVER:
-proper ventilation helps eliminate flashover conditions by removing the heat
BACKDRAFT:
-proper ventilation helps removes backdraft conditions by removing the heat
Flashover
where all contents of a room are heated to their ignition temperature and ignite
