Bones You Need to Know: Axial Skeleton Flashcards
Frontal Bone
Forehead to mid eye socket
Frontal bone-coronal suture
seperates front from parietals
Parietal Bones
bone behind the forehead that extends to the mid back of the skull
Parietal bones- sagittal suture
separates parietal bones from each other
Parietal bones- lambdoid suture
separates parietals from occipitals
Parietal bones squamous suture
separates parietals from squamous temporals
Temporal Bone
Large flat bone above the ear
Temporal Bone- zygomatic process
Froms posterior portion of zygomatic arch
Temporal bone- mandibular fossa
froms temporomandibular joint with mandibular condyle
Temporal bone- external acoustic meatus
external ear canal
Temporal bone-interal acoustic meatus
route of CN VII
Temporal bone- styloid process
connects the lesser horn of hyoid bone, tongue and neck muscles (pointy bone that sticks out from where the internal acoustic meatus would be.
Temporal bone-mastoid process
point of insertion of sternocleidomastoid
Occipital bone
Just below the Parietal bone
Occipital bone- foramen magnum
route of brainstem to spinal cord
Occipital bone- occipital condyles
“yes” joint between skull and atlas
Sphenoid bone
Just below frontal bone behind eye socket
Sphenoid bone- sella turcica
Protective recess of pituitary glad
Ethmoid bone
Deep to the lacrimal bone
Ethmoid bone- cribriform late
froms anterior cranial fossa with frontal bone
Ethmoid bone- crista galli
anchoring site for brain
Ethmoid bone- superior and middle nasal conchae
scroll-like bones of nasal passages
Mandible
Jawbone
Mandible- mandibular condyle
From temporomandibular joint with mandibular fossa
Maxillae
Bone just above upper teeth the wraps almost up to the bridge of the nose
Maxillae- hard palate
roof of the mouth (with ethmoid bone)
Maxillae- palatine process
forms hard palate with horizontal plate of ethmoid
Palatine bones
rear of hard palate
Zygomatic bone
Inferior lateral part of eye socket
Zygomatic bone- zygomatic arch
Area of origin of masseter muscle, with temporal bone
Lacrimal Bones
Route of Tear duct from orbit to nasopharynx
Nasal bones
Bridge of nose
Vomer
Behind deep to the soft palate
Inferior Nasal Conchae
Lateral and superficial to the vomer on both sides.
Hyoid bone
Base of the tongue
All vertebrae- body
main articulation with adjacent vertebrae; forms “floor” of vertebral canal, anterior to spinal cord
All vertebrae- spinous process
origins of trapezius, latissimus dorsi, rhomboid muscles
All vertebrae- transvese process
Artiulates w/ ribs; origins of several deep back muscles
All vertebrae- verebral canal
comprises all the vertebral foramina to form the brainstem, spinal cord, and caudal equina
All vertebrae- vertebral foramen
each vertebra’s contribution to the vertebral canal
Cervical Vertebrae (c1-c7)- transverse foramina
route of verebral arteries
Atlas (c1 only)- atlantoaxial joint
“no” joint between atlas and axis
Atlas- atlantooccipital joint
“yes” joint between atlas and occipital condyles
Axis (c2 only)- dens or odontoid process
forms part of “no” joint with atlas (pivot type joint)
Thoracic Vertebrae
t1-t12
Lumbar vertebrae
L1-L5
Sacrum (S1-S5, fused)- Apex
Inferior aspect of sacrum; articulates with coccyx
Sacrum- base
superior to aspect of sacrum, articulates with L5
Sacrum- body
comprises fused bodies of sacral vertebrae
Sternum-body
forms sternocostal joints with ribs
Sternum- manubrium
forms sternocostal joint with first rib
Sternum- ziphoid process
landmark for 5th interstal space
Ribs
true ribs 1-7, false ribs 8-12, floating ribs 11 and 12
