bones of skull Flashcards
name cranial bone
frontal, parietal (2), occipital, temporal (2), ethmoid, sphenoid
what is mastoid process?
contains mastoid air cells and inflammation can be due to acute otitis media
what is foramen magnum?
where spinal cord communicate with brain
what is the suture between frontal and parietal?
coronal suture
where is coronal suture?
between frontal and parietal
what is the suture between parietal and occipital?
lambdoid suture
what is the suture between 2 parietal bone?
sagittal suture
where is the anterior fontanelle?
between the 2 developing frontal and 2 developing parietal.
when does anterior frontanelle close?
around 2 years/ 9-18 months
where is the posterior frontanelle?
between sagittal and lambdoid suture
when does posterior fontanelle close?
around 6-8 weeks/2 months
what is suture?
they are dense fibrous joints made of collagen. they allow bones to move over each other during childbirth
where does olfactory nerve (CN I) enters?
cribriform plate of ethmoid bone
where does vestibulocochlear nerve (CN VIII) enter?
through internal auditory meatus
where does facial nerve enter?
through internal auditory meatus
what is pterion?
is a junction where frontal, parietal, temporal, and sphenoid bones meet
and is the weakest point of the skull
if trauma there is trauma at pterion, what blood vessl can rupture and will lead to what?
middle meningeal artery and vein could be rupture. this can cause lucid interval, delay in symptom and extra-dural haemorrhage
what is lucid interval
delay in symptom, that can be caused by rupture of middle meningeal artery
name facial bone (how many in total)
2 lacrimal, 2 maxilla, 2 nasal, 2 inferior concha, 2 palatine, vomer, 2 zygoma(malar), mandible
14 in total
what bones made up of the superior wall (roof) of eye socket?
frontal bone and lesser wing of sphenoid bone
what made up of the inferior wall (floor) of eye socket?
maxilla, palatine and zygomatic bones
maxilla separates orbit from maxillary sinus
what made up of medial wall of eye socket?
ethmoid, maxilla, lacrimal, sphenoid bones
ethmoid bone separate orbit from ethmoid sinus
what made up of lateral wall of eye socket?
zygomatic, greater wing of sphenoid
what does extra ocular muscle do?
move the eye and is outside of eye (not involved in vision)
where is apex of eye socket located?
Located at the opening to the optic canal, the optic foramen (CNII go through optic foramen)
which CN supply extra ocular muscle?
CN III, IV, VI
oculomotor, trochlear, abducent (all motor)
what muscle control eye movement?
extra ocular muscle
where is infraorbital foramen located?
on maxillary bone
what nerve terminate at infraorbital foramen?
infraorbital nerve(CN Vb), which is the maxillary division of trigeminal nerve (CN V)
where is ethmoid and vomer bone located?
in nasal septum
what does nasopalatine nerve do? (sensory branch of maxillary nerve)
supply sensory to palates and front teeth
