Bones Flashcards
What are the two types of bones?
Spongy & Compact bone
Compare compact and spongy bone?
– compact bone- outside, dense connective tissue, smooth white, & solid, 80% of bone mass
– spongy bone/ inside compact bone, appears porous, 20% bone mass! filled with red bone marrow in living adults
Name the functions of the bone?
- support & protect
- movement
- hemopoiesis ( blood cell production)
- stores calcium & phosphate
What are the thee types of cartilage? Where are they found?
Hyaline cartilage- formation of bones
Fetal skeletal, coastal cartilage( attaches rib age to sternum), tip of nose, trachea, ends of long bones (articulate cartilage)
Fibrocartilage- weight bearing, withstands compression
Intervertebral discs, menisci ( Knee joints), pubic symphysis (between bone & pelvis)
Elastic- stretches but keeps formations
Ear & epiglottis
Contrast ligaments & tendons.
Ligaments- anchor bone to bone
Tendons- anchors muscle to bone
There are 206 bones in the adult body, which are classified into 2 groups, name the groups.
Axial skeleton/ ( straight down center)- skull, vertebral column, sacral, and rib cage
Appendicular Skeleton/ bones of the upper and lower limbs, legs, arms, shoulder & hip girdle.
