Axial skeleton
Part of the skeleton which extends through our middle (skull, ribs, sternum, spine)
Appendicular skeleton
The part of the skeleton which lies on either side of the axial skeleton (arms, legs, collar bones, shoulders)
Compact bone
Denser type of bone, found on the outside of the spongy bone.
Spongy bone
honey-comb structured, lightweight bone, found inside of compact bone.
long bones
bones longer than they are wide
short bones
bones about as long as they are wide
flat bones
one layer of spongy bone sandwiched between two thin layers of compact bones; very thin.
Irregular bones
weirdly shaped bones, don’t fit into any other category; shapes vary
diaphysis
shaft/ center of bone
periosteum
a dense layer of vascular connective tissue enveloping the bones except at the surfaces of the joints.
epiphyseal line
cartilage plate which serves as an area for bone lengthening
Hematoma
solid mass of clotted blood in a tissue
cranium

occipital bone
the back and base of the skull, where the spine connects
