What is osteogenesis?
The process that develops the bone matrix. This process requires two types of cells, osteoblasts and osteogenic stem cells
What are osteoblasts?
(Bone-forming cells) they are scattered throughout bones and make new bone cells called osteocytes.
Where are osteocytes located?
Osteocytes our arranged throughout the bone matrix in circular patterns around a central tunnel called a Haversian canal
What are osteogenic stem cells?
Undifferentiated cells and can become any kind of cell need for bone formation
What do Haversian canals consist of?
Small blood vessel’s in nerve fibers that supply the needed nutrients to the bone matrix. They’re also small, hollow channels called canaliculi that link all of the Osteocytes of the bone matrix together so nutrients and waste can be transferred from one osteocyte to the next
What are osteoclasts?
They are bone cells that are present in the bone matrix to break down old bone when new bone layers form. This ensures that the inner cavities of the bone shift with bone growth and repair
What is ossification?
Bone tissue arises in replaces most cartilage structure to form a bony skeleton
What to types of bone tissue’s form during ossification?
Compact and spongy bone
What are the four bones layers?
Periosteum, compact bone, spongy bone, bone marrow
What are the four bone cells?
Osteogenic, osteoblasts, Osteoclasts, osteocytes
What is the function of osteogenic cells?
They are a type of stem cell and the only bone cell that can divide
What are osteoblast cells?
Bone building cells
What are osteoclast cells?
Bone destroying cells
What are osteocytes cells?
Cells involved in communication and transport and maintenance of the bone matrix
What is the role of each of the type of cells in bone repair?
The osteocytes communicate changes to the bone to the other cells. The osteoblast produce a hard callous that adheres to the dead bone at the injury site, which forms a temporary bridge of spongy bone to hold the ends together. Osteoclast remove any access bone and callous.
