Skin Flashcards
What are the three layers of the skin?
Epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis(also knows the subcutaneous layer)
What is the function of the epidermis layer?
It’s specialized cells act as physical and biological barriers to the environment
What are things found in the epidermis layer?
The stratum layers, melanocytes and melanin, and Merkel cells
What is the function of the stratum layers?
To provide a protective Barrier that prevents foreign and effective substances from entering the body
What is the role of melanocytes and melanin?
They influence skin color and provide protection from ultraviolet radiation
What is the function of Merkel cells?
They allow us to sense what’s happening on the outside of her body(temperature change or insect on you)
What is the dermis layer composed of?
Density regular connective tissue
How does the dermis help with Thermoregulation?
If you need to cool down, your sweat glands release heat which cools your skin as it evaporator this helps lower your internal temperature. The blood vessels under your skin get wider this increases blood flow to your skin where it is cooler away for your warmer in her body. This lets your body release heat through heat radiation
What is the role of nerves in the dermis layer?
They take in sensory information on pain, itchiness, temperature and forward it to the brain to trigger a response
What is the hypodermis composed of?
Loose connective tissue fat and contains large blood vessels and nerves
What are the hypodermis’s primary functions?
It is used for storage of fat and helps prevent loss of body heat, cushions and protects underline organs from injury in stores body cells when needed
