Bone Structure Flashcards
What tissue category is bone a part of?
Connective tissue
What does ECM stand for
Extracellular material
What are the 2 types of ECM
Organic and inorganic
What is organic ECM made up of
Collagen (protein) embedded in ground substance
What is the function of organic ECM?
To provide flexibility to the bone, resists tension
What is inorganic ECM made up of?
Hydroxyapatite and other Ca minerals
What is the function of inorganic ECM?
Makes bone hard and resistant to compression
What are osteogenic cells?
Stem cells that produce osteoblasts
What are osteoblasts?
Role and function
MAKERS: produce new bone matrix
= Bob the Builder
What are osteocytes?
Role and function
MAINTAINERS: recycle proteins and minerals from matrix, communicate with OB and OC to maintain homeostasis
(Beyonce)
What are osteoclasts?
Role and function
DESTROYERS: remove bone matrix
Thanos
What structure is found only in compact bone?
Osteons
What is an osteon?
Description and role
Cylindrical, longitudinal unit within compact bone. Provides pathway for nutrients to reach cells in the ECM
What is the central canal?
Description and role
Found in the centre of each osteon. Contains blood vessels and nerves needed for nutrients and communication.
What are lamellae?
Series of cylinders of ECM formed around central canal.
think tree rings
What are lacunae?
‘Lakes’ of osteocytes found between lamellae
What are canaliculi?
Channels for osteocytes through ECM. Enables nutrients and communication b/w OC (in lacunae) and central canal
