Cone marrow core biopsy (trephine biopsy) and bone marrow aspiration
What are the sites of bone marrow aspiration and biopsy in adults? In children?
Adult aspiration sites- iliac crest, sternum; Adult biopsy site- iliac crest; Pediatric procedure sites- iliac crest, tibia
What is the M:E ratio? What method of bone marrow collection is used for samples to determine this?
The myeloid to erythroid ratio; Aspiration
What non-hematopoietic cells are abnormal when found in the bone marrow?
Metastatic tumor cells, granulamatous inflammation, proliferating fibroblasts; many lymphs or plasma cells
What method of bone marrow collection is used for samples to determine the cellularity or hematopoietic: fat cell ratio?
Biopsy
What is a bone marrow “dry tap” and what does it indicate?
When no sample can be aspirated- seen in several disease states where the marrow is majorly infiltrated fibrosis or metastatic cells
