Bonds/Molarity/Polarity Flashcards
What is an Ionic bond?
the electrostatic force between two oppositely charged ions is the bond that holds them together
Example sentence: Sodium chloride is held together by an ionic bond.
What is a covalent bond?
shared pair of electrons
Example sentence: In a water molecule, oxygen and hydrogen atoms are held together by covalent bonds.
What is a hydrogen bond
A polar covalent bond forms where electrons are shared unequally between atoms
Example sentence: Hydrogen bonds play a crucial role in the structure of DNA.
What is a mole?
one mole of an element is the amount of that element that contains 6.022x10^23 atoms
Example sentence: The molarity of a solution can be calculated by dividing the moles of solute by the volume of the solution.
A molar solution contains…
contains 1 mole of solute (substance which dissolves) in 1 dm^3of solution
Example sentence: To prepare a molar solution of sodium chloride, dissolve one mole of NaCl in one liter of water.
Molarity formula
mass of substance / molar mass of substance
Example sentence: The molarity of a solution can be calculated using the formula M = n/V, where n is the number of moles of solute and V is the volume of the solution.
What does polarity mean?
Polarity means that water molecules can form hydrogen bonds with other water and polar molecules.
substances consisting of polar molecules = HYDROPHILIC
What type of molecules are considered hydrophilic?
Polar molecules are considered HYDROPHILIC.
What type of molecules are considered hydrophobic?
Non-polar molecules are considered HYDROPHOBIC.
