Glycogen Flashcards
1
Q
What is glycogen?
A
Glycogen is a storage polysaccharide in animals and bacteria - never in plants.
2
Q
How does glycogen differ from amylopectin?
A
Glycogen:
*fewer 1-4 glycosidic bonds,
*more 1-6 linkages,
*more branched.
3
Q
Where is glycogen found in animal cells?
A
Glycogen is found in granules of cytoplasm, particularly in muscle and liver cells.
4
Q
Why is glycogen a good storage molecule?
A
*insoluble- doesn’t affect osmosis
*large molecule- doesn’t diffuse out cell
*compact
*glucose can be released rapidly
