Bonds and Types of Reactions Flashcards
Combining (Synthesis) Reaction
Compounds and/or elements combined to synthesize a new compound
Combustion Reaction
The rapid reaction of a fuel with an oxidizing agent
Reactants of Combustion
Fuel + Oxidizing agent
Products of Combustion
Fuel gets oxidized; CO2 and H2O
Decomposition Reactions
Compound is decomposed into smaller/simpler compounds and/or elements, usually through heat
Double Replacement Reaction
Cations or anions in two ionic compounds switch places
Electrostatic Attraction
Attraction between positive and negative charges of protons and electrons
Ionic bond/compound
Forms between an anion and cation to neutralize the charge of the compound (nonmetals + metals)
Covalent Bond/Compound
Electrons are shared between atoms (2 nonmetals)
Single Replacement (Displacement)
Cation/Anion replaces the cation/anion present in the original compound (more reactive replaces less reactive)
Polyatomic Ion
Covalently bonded compound that acts as one ion
Neutralization Reaction
Acid and base react to form water and salt (combining of H+ and hydroxide to form water)
